Hi everyone,

So it's come to my attention that there are a number of people whose emails were attempted to be breached using stolen Boxcar data. Some were contacted by their email provider after noticing the weird login attempts. There are also a number of people who have data-related concerns from their workplace that I expect will need to be addressed fully at some point.

It's also come to my attention that the overall response by several RD leaders has been to begin discussing how to get revenge on me IRL, which is beyond unfortunate given this is a mother fluffing game.

As such, I'm compiling information to pass on to the relevant authorities in the jurisdiction of the perpetrator(s) and victims to get the ball rolling on that whole mess.

If you have feel you have been a victim of this, please come and find me on IRC to provide any information you may have.

Hi Pang,

Is there any way we could find out what password we had before they were all changed?

I have been out of contact with this game for a longer period of time and am only really back due to the email about the password change and I cant remember what I had it set to before. Depending on what my password was I might want to go switching passwords elsewhere just to be on the safe side.

Out of curiosity who are you planning to contact the authorities about and who has given you this supposed information on people going after your RL. Seems to be hearsay atm.

To be honest if anyone does anything IRL then just shut the game down. Its not worth it if that even is a remote possibility.

I'll say it right now -
If any RD leaders or members are actually in anyway discussing anything about Pang and RL you guys need to stop immediately.

If any bonehead actually considers plotting ANYTHING against Pang you are extremely deluded and dangerous and I for one have no problem with the full book being thrown at you.

However, I definitely haven't seen anything of the sort in the idling I've done in rdwarchat... and I'd really hope RD members and leaders are man enough to just walk away from this whole mess.

Sorry to hear you've had to deal with that nonsense, Pang. Trust me it was unsettling enough for me when Dibs, a special person, threatened to kill me, so I can only imagine this is some scary fluff.

And if I see anything in IRC remotely suggestive of some sort of RL plan on Pang, trust I will do all I can to help authorities and Pang handle the threat.

Threatening is a criminal act and is punishable under the law and you should pursue action against any and all who do without question, mercy, or pity.

Look at this dumbfluff:

Locket - the fact that nobody is talking about it in public is more troubling, IMO. Going on IRC in front of 40 people and saying "omg pang is an idiot I'm gonna kill him" is most likely someone just being a cry baby looking for attention. If there are threats or discussions going on behind the scenes I'd take those a lot more seriously. Nobody who is serious about causing harm is going to publicly discuss their plans on IRC.

Vilse: the passwords were encrypted. I'm not sure as to your background in these types of things so I'll explain it in a bit of detail. The encryption method produces a hash key (based on a mathematical formula) and the way that the system knows if you entered the correct password or not is it applies the same formula to your entered password and sees if it generates a hash key. The hash table (which is the table of encrypted passwords) is done in such a way that at least to anyone's knowledge there is no way to mathematically reverse the hash keys back into a password. However if you know the encryption method used (which certain people in RD would have known since they had the boxcar code) and the hash table, it is possible to do a "dictionary search" which contains the hash keys for common passwords.
So if you used a common password or an english word, then yeah they could have gotton your password. If you used some jumble of letters or a bunch of words strung together then no, the only way is brute force or use of methodologies/equipment beyond what anyone in this game would be able to access for this purpose.

There are encryption methods which prevent this kind of attack (ie to save people from themselves) so that even with the hash table a dictionary lookup like I described above would be useless.

Thanks Martian, that should be ok for me in that case, I tend never to have silly passwords that exist in any dictionary. I remember the good ole days when I hacked some UNIX password files and it was stupidly easy when someone used a "normal" word found in a dictionary.

I am glad you are moving forward with this Pang. What is being done is illegal, immoral and just plain stupid. Those involved deserve to be punished for their disregard. This is just a game, there is absolutely no reason this should flow over into RL. Those who take it so seriously need to get some serious help, I am not just trolling I am serious. Bunch of paperhanging fluff bullfluff. The perps are hiding? Goddamn cowards. There is little that i hate more than a sack of fluff behind a keyboard pretending to be hard. The police is not going to do fluff about this btw. Maybe we handle it ourselves.

I've already stated the extent of my involvement to multiple people in game and also to an admin.

As far as I could tell during the time no hacking had occurred, however posts show that something did. Any and such is far beyond my scope or understanding. It looks from provided postings that something has happened but i don't even remotely have a clue what all it entails or anything of the sort.

I have not heard any RD leaders or members planning any sort of revenge either in game or in RL. One member went on a rant the day of the deletions, but he even said multiple times in his rant that he was drunk and upset. He is a fun loving guy and everyone in the game knows he's a harmless guy, he was just ranting. Other than that I've seen or heard nothing.

If the assertions all made in the original thread are true, I still would not see Copper logging into people's life stuff (facebook,email,porn sites,etc). It wouldn't make sense and could jeopardize his RL job.

As per Pang's wishes I have quit the game and wish everyone the best of luck, Those that I provided help for still feel free to contact me if you need any help with strats etc or just want to chat.

Those are bold words Pang claiming RL threats, ive spoken ti higher ups in boxcar as and was in irc last night for many hours and nothing like that was ever talked about. Not to mention people here and others say the same thing, if its true I feel sorry for the state of the game but I highly doubt anyone cares enough to screw with anyones RL stuff.

I certainly have a new found respect for Mr Silver. I haven't seen anyone take this as well as he has. It's hard to show your frustration yet realize the magnitude of what has happened to players on both sides of the fence. Sorry to see anyone go but I do wish you luck.

Silver, I don't know you well enough to know whether or not to believe you about your lack of involvement. If you know who I am, then on the one hand you know that I absolutely despised the old RD's cheating. But on the other hand, I was told months ago by someone whom I trust very much that you were one RDer I could absolutely trust.

If you're being honest, it is a shame to see you go. Not many people (especially here, it seems) would display the civility you displayed with this post. And whether or not you're being genuine, thank you for trying to reintroduce some sanity regarding this issue.
