how does the fishing pay? I've still got my sea legs.
Ah I forgot you were going into the Navy. What were you?
How's Portland working out? Plenty of jobs if you want to work part time at a coffee shop...heh
Overall fishing is still good. Unfortunately it's getting harder and harder to get into. Misguided politics and regulations are really privatizing and downsizing the fleet. If your last name isn't such and such..etc. But there's still jobs out there. Especially if you've been on the water before and can wear many hats (ie:weld, mechanic, etc) It's fishing though... While I've literally made $2k+/hr before, on the flip side, I've seen $80 for a whole week at sea. But there are other rewards to being on the water.
Crab is about to start in Oregon. That's the big thing right now. Newport's probably a better place to look for a job, but if you show up, especially sober, chances are you can find a spot at least for a trip. It might take some asking around. Leave your # on the bulletin board at the top of the docks. If some hungover crewman no-shows, that's often where a skipper looks first, as he's cursing his way up to his truck. Otherwise summer salmon in Alaska is the hotspot. You kind of work your way around from there. Or try getting on with one of the big Alaskan draggers. They fish 10months of the year and hire a fair amount. And you can usually apply online.
Right now I'm planning on being back in Oregon for Albacore season. I could totally help you find a boat then, if I can't get you on the one I'll be on!
