I don't think I've seen a thread on this yet...

Has anyone tried this game?

I could not be more disappointed. It's essentially a regression of Civ 5. The UI looks like it's unfinished, the diplomacy mechanic is somehow worse (seriously.... this has always been a weak point for single-player mode), the tech tree and affinities seem like it's just an optimization. Each game feels like it's exactly the same and I'm playing against opponents with no personality at all. The only positive I can think of with this game is that the barbarian mechanic (aliens) is somewhat improved, although because of the other mechanics in the game aliens are not even a consideration once you get a few affinity levels and that feels like a mistake. Also, I felt like I needed to do more micromanagement for this game... and it's mindless micromanagement with more clicks/screens needed to set things up.

I've played 3 games now (2 epic) and I think I'm done until they make a bunch of changes.... if it comes from a $30 expansion I will probably just skip it. It's clear the team that makes this game is not adding any meaningful new ideas or change in gameplay concepts. This feels very much like a cash grabs. :(

I agree with just about everything you've said. Played it a handful of times, then found myself going back to civ 5. Haven't touched beyond earth in a couple weeks now.

I haven't bought it yet and had been looking forward to doing so before I read your post. :(

It has been said for some time that it is the odd numbered Civs which are the best.

Reminds me of Heroes of Might and Magic...

HoMM 3 was the shizznit, and then 4 was an abomination that should've been put down

How can something so good turn so bad with the next edition/version

Well, to be fair... I considered Civ 5, which I love now, basically unplayable after my first run through it on release day. I got some UI mods and eventually a gameplay mod (what became Communitas) that made it a lot better. After the Beyond The Sword expansion the game core got a nice balance and the game feels really complete now in general.

Civilization BE could be the new Alpha Centauri with similar upgrades... but after putting out what is essentially a mediocre Civ5 mod for $50 I'm not too inclined to keep shelling out money. I'll at least wait for some Steam sales at this point. I'm happy with Civ5 still and don't have the time I used to for gaming. Especially games where I can lose entire days.

I always found it was hard to go from Civ 4 to anything else. Although Civ 5 did get better with expansions.

See I didn't fall into that trap. I asked the mods on reddit.com/r/civ if I should get the Civ 5 Complete Edition (has both expansions and a bunch of DLC) or if I should go for Beyond Earth. Strongly recommended to get Civ 5 Complete instead. They said that all Civ games start out slow, so Beyond Earth could be really good down the road, but right now Civ 5 and all its expansions is the way to go.

Yep, it's sad but true. I think it's in their release model now to plan to roll out an expansion that basically makes the game playable. Then they get $50 from people like me who are always early adopters + $30 from me for an expansion or $60 from the guy who waits and buys the bundle.

I'm not sure if Civ 5 Complete is still on sale on Steam, but I picked it up for $12.49 USD. If not it always goes on sale here and there. I advise subscribing to reddit.com/r/gamedeals for good deals on games.

I wanted to get beyond earth so bad... but I knew it was probably going to fall short compared to Civ 5 so I waited it out and heard the same things. DOn't buy for a while when expension packs come out etc..
Lame, and I was looking forward to it being a good game out the gate.

Steam does have sales on Civ 5 semi frequently it seems. Like once every 2 months or so.
I actually got my Civ 5 and all expansion and previous games from Humblebundle.com for like 8 bucks and its for charity :P

It looked a little disappointing from the gameplay vids i saw and reviews, so I've skipped it for now; besides, I still have yet to finish a game of Europa Universalis IV...
Finally did the signature thing.

My opinion exactly. I didn't like it... Was looking forward to it but yeah it's not what I wanted. I guess they can't top their classic: Alpha Centauri.

I picked up Civ V on a Steam sale for the complete pact with all expansions for 15 bucks. That was well worth it although the multiplayer in Civ V is complete garbage. It is a single player only game for me.

You know what I really enjoyed, despite it being unfinished and in Beta, was Galactic Civilizations III. It kept me busy for days. Im actually excited for the proper release. You can find GalCiv3 'out there' atm.

I haven't touched EU4 yet. I've been playing Mount and Blade instead, but EU4 is still absolutely on my to-do list. The amount of work Paradox puts into those games is just amazing :D
