Personally, I am of the opinion that there are millions of Americans out there who have no voice in government. This would not be the case if we moved away from the antiquated system of geographic representation and had true ideological representation.

Regardless, the popular vote in the presidential election means very very little. That is not how a President gets elected, though they will be quick to point to it to show they somehow have a mandate from the masses. Nevermind the millions of people who were merely voting against their opponent...

If the republicans (not their candidates per say) would take a more centrist position on social issues, they very well could win. But when your platform sounds anti-black, anti-gay, anti-women, anti-hispanic, anti-blah anti this, anti-that, etc - you are starting with a pretty restricted base before the first vote is cast. The republicans didn't get beat by 'liberals' in the last two elections, they got beat by women voters. So, yeah - keep pushing farther to the right to get those mythical conservative voters out - thats a sure fire recipe for success.

Conservatives need to decide if they want to be christian moral crusaders or small government fiscal libertarians - those two things are not very compatible. If they want to be both, they are going to keep losing ground in national elections.

The problem with the current process is that Democrats have to pander to the far left and Republicans have to pander to the far right to win the primaries before turning back hard towards the center for the general election. Currently, the Republicans have to go farther to the right due to the current insurrection occurring there, which significantly lessens their capability to "right the ship" (so to speak) back to the moderate center for the general election. We saw an element of this not too terribly long ago on the Democratic side with the likes of Ralph Nader and Howard Dean on the far left.

The problem is not that the Republicans have to choose between "Christian moral crusaders" and "small government fiscal libertarians." The problem is that the Republican Party acts as a coalition government of sorts for all versions of what would otherwise be conservative parties. In short, the Republicans will always have to represent both, just as the Democrats have, for example, had difficulties balancing ecology and unions. Either they'll find ways to work together, one will come to dominate the other (see fiscal libertarian Republicans in the post-Goldwater era until arguably the '94 Republican Revolution), or we'll see a continuation of this internecine war which will make the party less and less electable as they bloody each other in the primaries and have nothing left for the general elections.

Parties win when they have the largest tents possible because large tents cover more voters. However, this comes at the sacrifice of ideological purity. At this point in time, the Republican Party appears content to maintain this purity, even if it means less popular victories.

I support gay marriage (if done by the consent of the people of a state or by state courts using the State Constitution and not by being imposed from on high [Federal Courts]). I oppose the death penalty (not for the truly guilty people, but the rare person wrongfully convicted). I am Pro-Life, excepting the defense of the life (life, not health because a pregnancy would be an inconvenience) of the mother; however, I am not going to stand outside an abortion clinic unless it's to hand out pamphlets offering alternatives and absolutely no condemnation whether they accept the papers or not. I want the government to pull back and society to step up because opportunities reduce inequality and increase everyone's wealth.

My sincerely held beliefs are not swing vote politics. If the Republicans are not willing to change their position on liberty issues and the Democrats are not willing to change their views on the idea that government knows best, then perhaps it's time for the libertarian factions of the Republican and Democratic parties to vote with the actual Libertarian Party. On one side you have authoritarian social policies and on the other side you have authoritarian economic policies. Time to take both authoritarian modes of thought and shove them.
