I would suggest checking the Clan Directory in the wiki, they have links to retal policies(some might be outdated though)

48 hours

everybody used to do 72, but with the new 3 turns per hour, 72 is too long (IMHO)

Most alliances have a 48 hour policy

My alliance's policy on FFA is 48 hours for 1 retal, 72 hours if more than one retal is owed. I think that's the best way to balance the 48 hours and 72 hours retal policies.
