Ok, I figured I'd put this out to the community, as you guys are going to be the ones reading this.. I've run into a little snag...

Our largest player population next to English speaking countries is Malaysian. I've been doing some reading and there's like 4 different (yet similar) languages in that region.. for maximum compatibility and minimal work, I want to know which one is the most popular and widely understood in the area. Which would be the most preferred for wiki translations?

It would be better to only have to translate to one of them, however if there is enough interest, we could possibly translate to more than one. Thanks for your help!

there's only two languages, can you list what the 4 languages are?

(From wikipedia)
"Malay is a major language of the Austronesian family. It is the official language of Malaysia (as Malaysian), Indonesia (as Indonesian), Brunei (as Melayu Brunei) and Singapore (as the national language and one of four official languages of Singapore). It is spoken natively by 40 million people..."

Diez is right, there are only two main malay languages - Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia.

I think your confusion probably comes from this line (as the national language and one of four official languages of Singapore). A short answer to that is, Bahasa Melayu is one of the four official languages of Singapore. The other three official languages are non-Malay.

More comprehensive explanation is: because Singapore used to be part of Malaysia (we gained independence in 1965), Malay remains as our national language (our military commands are given in Malay).

However, we have four official languages - English, Mandarin (Chinese), Malay and Tamil (Indian). English is the first language for all Singaporeans. We are then required to take second languages in school - either Mandarin, Malay (Bahasa Melayu) or Tamil.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the clarification :).. but which is the most widely understood, and what are your own personal preferences? I realize that they may be similar, but it is a lot easier to translate into one language rather than 2.

@ Kid: That's bullfluff dude, there's no such thing as Bahasa Jawi, there's only Tulisan Jawi. Read more noob.

Basically, Bahasa Melayu (Malaysian version) and Bahasa Indonesia are kinda like Britglish and Americanglish. There's different terms and terminology used for certain things but in general the overall structure and grammar is the same. Well, cept for the (Indonesian) accent bit which sucks. Brunei's version should be pretty similar to ours (Bahasa Melayu) and Singapore is one of our former states so they use the exact same version. Indonesians are the lost sheep so just ignore their version.

But then again, seeing as how a significant portion of online browser gamers are Malaysians (as you stated in your first post), it would be more prudent to use our version of the Malay language rather than that of the failnubs from across the strait.

Bahasa Melayu ftw!

Diez sucks!

Bahasa Melayu = American English
Bahasa Indonesia = British English

well since there's more malaysians than indonesians, I guess Bahasa Melayu will suit the game best. However, Indonesia have like 20x more population than Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei combined, so there's a lot of potential for growth there :)

The best solution for Singaporeans is to make singlish as their new language option.

Very easy to implement, really.

Honestly speaking, most ppl in malaysia who plays this game understand english. I don't see a point in having it in malay. =) i wouldn't want to read the wiki in malay.

@Qzul, using Indonesian would be best since most of them are tards who can't speak/read/understand English whereas most Malaysians can.

Either version is fine since the basic language structure is the same and we can understand Bahasa Indonesia and they can understand Bahasa Malaysia. Not much difference to be honest...

To answer Kid's question way up above, you pronounce Jawi the way it's meant to be pronounced, like every other alphabet/writing system :P

And I agree with most of the above, for Malaysians, English is fine. If they still don't understand, they can always read the Indonesian version. :)
