Why don't we just make 1 button called EXPLORE/BUILD/NET/WAR and then we can just see who can click it the fastest?

Slagpit's had a few ideas on how we could change oil to make it have more impact on the game...

I'll direct him here and see if he wants to discuss it :p
The ideas are awesome, but we're still trying to figure out the best way to balance it before we do more than talk about it in staff/admin places :p

The oil market should function differently. Oil should have a fluxuating price based on demand. It shouldn't be set by each individual oiler trying to undercut another. Oil shouldn't be bought in the market by each player either. It should be obtained automatically each turn based on a percentage of money that the country is willing to spend on it.

There should always be oil automatically in the market as well (to prevent potential problems) the price of it should just be high until oil is infused into the market by oilers (who would set a percentage of their oil to place on the market per turn). So the more oil put into the market the lower the price of oil gets (though it should decrease steadily). Oil sold by an oiler onto the market should give them instant cash as well based on the current oil market prices.

On top of that oil should have an impact on countries beyond just attacking. Such as on a country's economy. Without sufficient oil a country's economy should suffer. Say you need 1/1,000 barrels per population to break even on your normal cash flow. If it drops below that tax revenue decreases steadily. If you buy more than that you stockpile oil for military usage.

Is simple

If we make Oil a commodity (IE can be sold in PM), then more people will STOCK it (NO DECAY) so the market will move oil around, also peaks won't be ridiculous as more people will play Oiler, that also helps farmers as LESS people will play farmer.

and weakens Cashers :P

That makes no sense. It does fluctuate based on demand; and supply. People undercut because they sense they are over-supplying. If demand is high enough, their stuff gets bought up and more.
Finally did the signature thing.

What makes no sense? I never said it didn't currently fluctuate based on demand.

When oil prices went to 2500, a bunch of people were idiots and decided to go oiler, not realizing that way too many people were going to do this, and that the supply would be way more than the demand very shortly.

Anyone with half a brain would realize that sending oil prices up to $2500 would make people build oil rigs, and that too many people would do that. Its FFA, afterall, the server where people take pride in their incompetence.

Poor wording on my part. My main point was to take the pricing out of the hands of the oilers all together, add more demand to oil (via the suggestion I made), and have the price automatically fluctuate based on the amount of oil in the system.

iovan are you suggesting that oil prices be fixed by the system? not by the seller?

your suggestions is a ball of cats to me

Make it so oil can be sold in PM as well, that will turn it into a commodity and people WILL stock oil, and the prices of both food and oil will balance out.

Ball of cats.

Why take out something that just needs minor tweaks.

Again, if oil can be sold in the private market, it will be a commodity, in turn more people will stock it, then more people will play it, both food and oil prices will balance out

we already gave it a price floor in Express

maybe we should ask them how they like it and how it's impacted their play.

I'll go do that now on the Express board :p

Oil is unique because of how it came about and got "left out" of all the coding. And I hate how you can simply funnel cash through the private food channel, it streamlines jumping and net strategies too much.

why dont you make it just like life today. All civilians use x amount of oil per turn to fuel their vehicals. You also need to oil to run your military for training exersies. Give a income bonus to running turns with oil on hand.

Oil is an important component to warring too, removing it destroys a huge advantage war countries have from being prepared. It also takes an element away from efficient grabbing - is it better to stock oil early when it's cheap so you have to spend less on it later? Or is it better to buy tech early and just buy as you go with oil? These tradeoffs are what make the difference between the first and second place farmer on the server.
