That's just bs spread by the diamond cartel err industry.
I would *not* spend 2 months salary on a shiny rock plus my wife would probably kill me if I did.
My ring cost about $300 and is tungsten. Never have to worry about it breaking:)
Her engagement ring plus wedding wring cost about $2500 (on sale) as a matched set:P

I spent $7500 all together for her engagement ring & wedding band. Of course you got off easy.

Depends on a mans situation I guess. I own my house outright and own my truck outright... so with no huge expenses, I'm able to save a lot. I was well under the 2 month salary ish, but still felt like I spent too much.

2 months salary is for the engagement ring, not the wedding band. And that is an unholy rip off. Spending that much on a shiny rock is crazy.

that said my wife's engagement was $2k, her wedding band was $400, and my wedding band was $250. Still crazy, but happily not too terrible.

also diamonds in stores have huge markups. Your diamond should appraise for double what you paid(less the cost of the band itself).

We got it engraved and it was a limited edition.

I am just as married as candyman and i spent much less.

mine was ~ 800 and maybe 3k on the engagement ,ring and the wrap that was apparently needed so the engagement ring goes tog.

then there was the 3k on the other hand that was needed to balance the weight out. this one i shopped for hard and got for 900 so i didn't care so much. I felt good cause the deal i got.

3 months salary purchase for just about anything other than a car or a downpayment on a house is crazy. 3 months salary = savings you should have for emergencies (in theory).
My general rule for large purchases is no more than 50% of one month's salary after taxes and only if I already have enough in my bank account:p

I think when it was all said and done her set cost around $2k and mine was like $200 tops. I told her don't buy me anything fancy because I believe the people who say the average man loses his wedding band something like 7x in his life. Either way, we didn't splurge on our wedding either as we decided to use a ton of money on buying a home. Yah for overpriced DC area homes.

What do you consider "ludicrous" out of curiousity.
I can get a 1000 sq foot piece of crap shack around here for $400K... and remember interest payments on mortgages are not tax deductible here (but there is no capital gains tax on primary residence). This is for non-commercial purposes. If I rent out the basement then things change:P

I know it's all a matter of location, location, location. It just blows my mind that a similar house can go for 100k in these parts, and the same thing can go for a half million up in/around NoVA.

I have no idea how people in California or... i think it's Vancouver that has really inflated home prices right? are able to afford buying a house.

Yah, it's killer when we travel elsewhere and see old historical homes on beautiful plots for a fraction of the price. Flip side, we did get a good deal on our home and we're both less than 10 miles from our offices in downtown DC.

Arlington is very nice and very pricey. I remember the pos houses I looked at there were all slightly above our price range. I felt insanely poor, haha.

people do it due to cheap credit and relatively lose lending rules. I know people who spend more than 2/3rds of their income financing, and it isn't like they are rich either.

I draw the limit at 1/3rd post tax (pre pension contribution) income for total housing costs. That's mortgage/rent/utilities/property tax/repairs

and here:
http://www.realtor.ca/...48&PidKey=-1323356663

There are a couple of catches though:P
(and have fun in the winter)

Otherwise it's all about desirability. More and more people either rent or buy condohs in the more expensive areas.

something comparable in my town. the house I posted is a little smaller, has one fewer bedroom, the lot is half the size, and it's 50 years older. On the other hand it has an extra bathroom and costs 9 times as much.
