10 British bands you've probably never heard of.
1. Carter USM
Carter are/were for most of their career a 2 piece band consisting of Jim bob and fruitbat. They both played guitar and used a drum machine to provide the drums and bass. The music was laced with samples and witty gritty lyrics.
Check out : The only living boy in New cross, while you were out and sheriff fatman.
2. The Wonderstuff
The Wonderstuff started out as a 4 piece angst punk thing . They soon evolved into a more rounded band when they added a violin player. Their songs were catchy with the occasional sarcastic lyrics.
Check out : don't let me down gently, caught in my shadow, hot love now
3. Neds Atomic Dustbin
Neds Atomic Dustbin were/are a 5 piece with an unusual set up, they used 2 bass players which gave their songs a powerful sound the tune was played on the one bass (which played chords) with the the normal bass being played on the other bass with the guitar played at high speed .
Check out : kill your television, happy, not sleeping around
4. Super Furry Animals
Super Furry Animals are welsh they record in english and Welsh. Their music is catchy with clever lyrics. They are a hard band to describe your just gonna have to trust me with this one.
Check out : ice hockey hair, god! Show me magic, hometown unicorn
5. Pop Will Eat Itself
A band that were constantly changing. They started as a 4 piece band after the first album there was a reshuffle resulting in the drummer becoming the second singer and a drum machine being used. They fused rap hip-hop and rock. They used a hell of a lot of samples in their songs. Some songs were industrial other were almost dance music.
Check out : def con one, ich bin ein auslander and dance of the mad
6. Melys
Another welsh band, melts had a female singer with the most beautiful voice I've ever heard she could go from singing a sweet heartfelt love song to singing a song angrily. The band never got big due to record label problems and ended up setting up their own record label, the UK music press referred to her as the welsh Bjork
Check out : Chinese whispers, disco pig and baby tornado
7. Gorky's zygotic mynci
The last welsh band on my list. They mixed folk and almost psychedelic music. The shunned big record labels, music magazines and the celebrity lifestyle and just recorded the music they wanted to record. It was almost like they were not bothered if people like it or not.
Check out : patio song, her hair hangs long and fresher than the sweetness in water
8. The Stone Roses
Although they only released 2 albums they became one of the biggest bands in the UK in the 90's by writing good honest songs. The music press labelled them the 90's Beatles.
Check out : fools gold, waterfall and ten storey love song
9. Blur
Blur feel like they have been around forever but they are another early 90's band. They were pitted up against Oasis in a kind of battle of the band's in the charts, you were either Oasis or Blur. Blur released country house while Oasis released roll with it, although country house isn't one of Blur's best songs it out sold the oasis single. A good solid band that rarely recorded a band song.
Check out : song 2, M.O.R and tender.
10. Ash
Ash are an Irish 3 piece that were quite big in the 90's. They released quite a lot of power pop guitar songs but never seemed to release the best stuff of the albums. They did do a heavy metal album but it didn't really work.
Check out : lose control, girl from mars and sometimes.
These are not in order and I've missed out some bands that I think most people have heard of
