I don't try to sound smart. I just make the points that need to be made. I value truth and reason.

I understand truth and reason offend a lot of people. Like I've said, I have fought hard in my life for what is right. Those people who can't find it within themselves to make the difficult choice to be honest and direct in spite of their egos do not deserve respect.

Nope Heston, it doesn't work that way. You don't get to swing in, denounce everyone, and play the impartial man. Scott claimed Clinton supports eugenics. His claims and the two links he has clung to as his sole attempt to justify those claims were then thoroughly discredited by multiple respondents. He has reacted by dodging questions, twisting the truth, and crassly flaming each and every person who has refuted him. His posts are a prime example of why liars like him are destroying productive political forum in this country. I have always fought for truth in my life, and I never shy away from calling out a proven liar when I see one.

We each have a responsibility to fight against deception, malice, and ignorance. I think that's naturally why you've seen so many posters refute Scott in this thread.

My work here is done. You have sufficiently exposed yourself as a fraud. You are incapable of patient, well reasoned, fact based discussion, and it has been amply demonstrated that you ignore material as necessary for reasons that I must assume are more willful manipulation than crackpot ignorance.

I hope that old age will one day temper your hate.

If one chooses not to vote, is that not tantamount to tacit support? I think the answer to OP's question is no. The vote itself is not presupposed - the act of voting is itself the first vote, a choice to participate in or abstain from the political process in that specific regard. One might have reasons for abstaining as well considered and principled as reasons for participating.

One of the first acts in the process of expression is exercising the discretion of choosing when to use one's voice. It can even be held that choosing not to speak is itself a speech act, especially in certain circumstances. The choice not to speak is explicitly an act of withholding support, and cannot be misconstrued as support for a candidate, even in a tacit capacity.

I guess all well reasoned positions are just part of the vast conspiracy against the right.

Yes, I think this might be a watershed year for the libertarian ticket Red. Both candidates' unfavorable ratings are so high, people are being driven to vote libertarian. But the cause in itself belies the transience of the effect - history shows us that while third parties enjoy their time in the sun when the circumstances are sufficiently progenerate, for one reason or another (and I don't know why this is so), their viability recedes and we default to the binary status quo.

But I hope that your hope is well founded. Maybe this will be the cycle to defy hundreds of years of two party process. I want voters to have more choices, and choose with diligently applied reason toward the goal of effecting positive change in the long term. I want people to see far down the road and meta-analyze the voting process itself to build a more inclusive and substantive debate.

The sad reality, however, is that attention spans are waning. Immediate gratification is not just the norm in the news cycle, it's the norm by which people selectively choose and internalize information to confirm presupposed interpretations. Absent a critical and sustainable mass of voters willing to vote for a third party over many cycles, the exigencies of the present require us to vote pragmatically. How do we cross that threshold? I don't know. What I do know is that people like Scott abound. While we deal in soundbites as a result of these turds, our political process can never mature.

I had a girlfriend in college tell me regarding her abusive father: "You can't reason with crazy."

It's very, very tempting to try to use logic with these people. Logic is no antidote. A carefully reasoned argument against their slander will be partly ignored and in other part misquoted out of context. The only answer? Ignore them. They thrive on the attention. They use their employer's cell phones to obsessively check AT for any opportunity to get it.

If they weren't so easy and entertaining to fluff around with, they might go away.

No class.

I guess being a gentleman is about as tall an order for you as, well, telling the truth.

Anyway, the garbage you inject into every one of your posts aside, you linked to an article discussing Sanger's support of eugenics. That is evidence that you can Google search two terms in one field: Sanger, and Eugenics. It doesn't do a thing to further your argument that Clinton supports eugenics. Keep twisting that truth, liar.

Also, why is it that you can be pretty well relied upon to respond within mere minutes of each of my posts, when I'm able to swing by here just about once a day?

I'm kind of curious to see if you keep that pace up over Memorial Day weekend, quick draw. I'd like to know if you really are using the work computer to spam AT instead of actually working, or if you've simply got nothing better to do with your time in general.

I guess, hey, if it makes you feel good Scott. Whatever fills the hole.

Sam, you do yourself a disservice by putting yourself in the same vein of political thinking as Scott. You're able to forward a cohesive argument and address points with a tone and structure appropriate for discussion. I disagree with you that we're regressing toward a state of feudalism, because freedom is an inclusive and complex concept that evolves with a rapidly changing society, and as we become less free in some ways, we become more free in others. Some change is bad, some is good. We tend to make the mistake of putting our rose colored glasses on when we look at all that was right with this country back in the day. I can agree or disagree with you on any myriad number of points, but in doing so that discussion would be mutually respectful.

Scott, on the other hand, is a blithering idiot and liar who has no qualms about ignoring evidence, failing to supply evidence, taking things out of context, and directly contradicting his prior claims. He has no backbone, and will say whatever he needs to say to feel/look good.

In short, he is a liar.

I don't get the impression you're cut from that mold.

There we go, more ego. You have nothing to contribute but that which serves the purposes of making you feel better about yourself.

We have nothing to learn from you and you choose to learn nothing from us. Time and time again the Scott of AT has taken a pass on opportunities for reasonable, possibly even constructive discussion in favor of insulting others and twisting the truth. If you do it on AT, you probably do it elsewhere.

Pathetic.

Elevating yourself above the two party system is a popular and fruitless effort. Yes, the two party system is non-ideal. Yes, it dilutes and conflates issues that might otherwise get fair forum. Yes, it fails to give us exactly the choice we want, when we want it. Sometimes we even get a whole two uninspiring choices. All two choices, completely uninspiring. Time for us to go cry in our tea.

But it is our political system, and we choose to make something of it. You want to tout yourself as a Gary Johnson devotee? Put a Galt Life sticker on your bumper? Enjoy the sidelines, and be sure to make frequent mention of how the prevailing political system doesn't suit your fancy so you can appear and feel to be above the entire structure of elected office in the United States. Ok buddy.

The reality of the situation is that ideas are in the field and progress is being made, whether you and your ego choose to participate or not. Setting up a false equivalency between the two political parties is worse than pointless, it is counterproductive, undermining the potential for constructive debate before it can even start. These two parties, all the microscale and interpersonal relationship intricacies notwithstanding, are at war with each other Scott. Do you not see billions of dollars in play? Do you see "no discernible difference" between the two opposing forces anywhere in the wide range of issues over which there is bitter disagreement and intransigence?

Politics is the largest game, and it's not being played solely for your entertainment, or even your self-serving wholesale denunciation.

Man up. Use your head for something other than lying and putting others down.

You mean the question I posed?

I take it you don't like it when someone poses difficult questions to you. Questions that make you think outside the box of the plumbing supply shop where you've been using the company computer to rack up 856 posts of lying, trolling, flaming, manipulating, and scheming. Anything but dealing with the difficulty of truth. Anything but working.

Did you put the Trump bumper stickers on the trucks there?

Make AT great again Scott. Make Trump proud!

I don't have time for the Scotts of the world who ignore facts and truth. I am a man of science. I deal in facts. We all have too much to do on a daily basis to wade through the bullfluff that people like you are flooding our world with. We don't have time to deal with manipulators, liars, and schemers.

Get off AT and get back to work.

Good answer Sam.

Scott, I do not deal with frauds. You are a fraud.

When asked to provide evidence for a claim, you say it's been discussed in other threads, then tell me to go find the evidence for myself. You either have no concept of the burden of proof, or choose to ignore it. I have no desire to dig up evidence on why someone might choose to believe that Clinton espouses eugenics. It's an outlandish claim, and so I'm rather more interested in seeing what (no doubt entertaining) evidence you might provide for it.

I see that when you're asked for facts and evidence, you resort to trolling and name calling, then pass the buck on substantiating your claims.

That is your reputation to choose. If you choose to play a game of rhetoric, I will let you play with yourself.

I deal in facts.

"We discussed it in earlier threads" does not constitute evidence for your claim. Try again.

Promoting a false equivalency between red and blue also does not make you avante garde, Scott. It makes you subject to fallacy. Especially when your political views are well known on AT anyway.

Now answer the question. It's just for fun. Who do you think would be more likely to vote Nazi, given a different time and place? Sanders supporters? Clinton supporters? Trump supporters?

Scott, provide evidence that Clinton supports eugenics.

Also, the Nazi party loathed socialism and Goebbels railed against the Soviet Union and socialism in his propaganda machine.

Barring exogenous catastrophe Trump's odds are between 0.05 & 0. This is the reality of it.

Creating a false equivalency between the two parties is usually an act of vanity. Sadly, that opt-out act is actually harmful, as it encourages complacency. Stop doing it. Let's make progress. Get on the field and choose a team.

Also, Ford is right, hashtags are overused and annoying, just like Twitter itself.

An eon ago we talked on General Talk about useful things.

Here are some thoughts.

• Stop union busting and the rising autocracy of corporate wealth and power at the expense of a reasonable wage - and I mean simply enough to take care of a family on.

• Destroy corruption and waste in defense spending and the military industrial complex that perpetuates it at our expense. How much good could we do with the money we overspend on defense if we think critically about how we can effectively guard ourselves with far less?

• Be critical of the negligence some display toward education and healthcare spending for all citizens - as if higher learning and health were not the future and prosperous right of all people.

• Attack tax evasion, job evisceration, and lies about the tax code. A flat tax and any incremental move toward it is so absurdly unfair for obvious reasons it is simply criminal to pretend otherwise. Those who claim to love the country which has made them rich will give back to it with gratefulness. Raise taxes on the wealthy. They'll be ok, and they'll still be wealthy. We've seen that a trickle down economy does not work, and that policies catering to the wealthy do not create wealth elsewhere. The lie that asking the wealthy to contribute will send them packing is tantamount to being held hostage by their demands on the basis of their financial power.

• Legalize marijuana. It's not hurting anything but our criminal justice system.

• Invest deeply in the vast untapped resource that is this nation's incarcerated population. Some are beyond hope, but most are not. Treat them like human beings who've made mistakes, and give them the tools to thrive honestly instead of relegating them to a dim future in a privatized imprisonment industry.

• Open our borders. Racism and stereotypes have no place in politics. The greatest resource we have are our people. The people who want in should be seen as a resource, not a liability.

• Invest heavily in space exploration and research into technologies which will one day enable the colonization of other worlds. No matter how resilient our Earth is, we are blind if we continue to put all our eggs into one basket.

If you care more about the future than the present, if you are unafraid of change, if your open mind welcomes progress and you allow yourself to evolve, if your loving heart embraces other perspectives and takes no joy in destruction or in domination, if you would rather perceive than judge, and give, with guarded trust, because you believe all human beings have equal rights, then you ARE a liberal.

Twenty-five years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill of hope
For a destination

I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood of man
For whatever that means

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar.

'n so I wake in the morning
'n I step outside
'n I take a deep breath and I get real high
'n I scream from the top of my lungs
What's going on?

And I say: HEY! yeah yeaaah, HEY yeah yea
I said hey, what's going on?

And I say: HEY! yeah yeaaah, HEY yeah yea
I said hey, what's going on?

ooh, ooh ooooooooooooooooh
ooh, ooh ooooooooooooooooh

and I try, oh my god do I try
I try all the time, in this institution

And I pray, oh my god do I pray
I pray every single day
For a revolution.

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
'n I step outside
'n I take a deep breath and I get real high

And I say, hey hey hey hey
I said hey, what's going on?
