Err Australia already has 100mbps and we are building a futuristic network that will provide 80mbps.

Yes the billions put into the network have already been trumped by the old network. However the new super network will be expandable to 1000 Mbps by 2050-60.

That will be sweet... Except anti piracy goups are already targeting people on the top plans because piracy is the only feasible way to use up 1000gigs per month outside file servers.

Depends on where you live in Australia. In America the slowest you get is 2-3mbps.

In Australia the slowest you get is 56k or none.

So really it depends, only the captials have great internet. The only difference between Australia and US internet, is that Australia started pursuing sustainable internet growth a decade ago.

It meant for ten years our internet access was far inferior to the US. Unlimited internet plans were abandoned in 2000, with the colapse of large ISPs following the American model. However the US business models of ISPs have only just been seen as unsustainable recently in the US (last year). So the turtle has only just beaten the hare. It took 10 years though.

The bigger problem for Australia, is that the minister in charge information technology is:
1.) Unable to understand technology and business models of ISPs
2.) Is communist and loves the Chinese model of censoring the internet for illegal (good) and political (WTF) material.

The current system they are developing is something like this; all material is filtered including adult material, you can however opt out of the filter which will allow non-illegal and non-political content to be accessed. Though your internet logs will be monitored. However given how Australia classes material as illegal, you'd be insane to opt out of the filter.

Yay! I love the Australian communist party.

i would say it's quite a stretch to accuse the labor party of being a communist party given that it has been lurching to the right on pretty much all issues @ a federal level.

Add to that the very issue you talk about, with the filtering being pushed by the religious right who don't support the labor party.. they support the Coalition.

Given the greens/coalition both oppose it, and labor needs 1 of them to get it through the upper house, and could lose minority govt. support if it tries to push these sorts of clear anti-greens agenda policies through.

On top of that the filter does not target any political content at all. It only targets child porn sites, + some adult material/lots of sites that were placed wrongly on the blacklist due to incompetence..

I seriously doubt Stephen Conroy, as stupid as he is, would be able to get much off the ground regarding the filter, given it alienates so many who should be labor party faithful, and is so blatently not in line with general labor policy on other tech issues such as R18+ games rating and NBN etc.

Given the current trouble the party has to deal with Federally, such as incompetent state labor parties destroying brand image, having to deal with the moronic/idiotic aussie press/climate skeptics and the absurd notion that keeping a budget in surplus is more important that infrastructure construction etc..

i shouldn't have posted on an aussie politics thread. Why is this country filled with such idiots..seriously.

I think will take forever to launch as well. Though if you actually read the legislation in regards to the classification laws.

1.) unrated material is technically illegal unless it has approval to be unrated. The majority of pages accessed by Australians are unrated and therefore could be filtered. (obviously you've never used the governments filters before, that block sites for obscure reasons) You will have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they won't filter unrated content like they have in past.
2.) Issues such as euthenasia are filtered because they are illegal, as well as certain abortion drug information is filtered as its semi-illegal.
3.) yes you were correct about the incompetence, thats the most disturbing thing, if your business's site is blacklisted by mistake you have no way of knowing and very little means of appeal.
4.) the filter won't actually stop the illegal material that it was designed to stop, as it has already been shown by consultants that its easy to bipass with certain setups, eg proxies, p2p, etc.

Will it be successful, I don't think so as well, I agree with you that in the current climate it will be quite hard to put forward. They are/were doing so to try and win the votes of the religious right. However they haven't abandoned the policy and they have successfully trialled in in certain states/isps.

Rofl as for calling them the communist party, it was because I once met a bunch of dudes that just went on and on about how they hated labor lol. It was quite funny the conspiracy theories they had about the government. So I just included it for laughs to see what happened.

i just get easily annoyed at the americanisation of our political parties.

It seems each Liberal/Coalition and Labor leader gets dumber and dumber each time.

I felt like throwing up whenever i saw Tony Abbott's "stop the boats" ads on tv last election. But then i'd see Julia Gillard repeating the same stupid meaningless phrases over and over and over and over.. and then i want to hurl again.

I wish Malcolm Turnbull would oust Abbott.

Thirdly, I agree with you about the Australian media, they are seriously turning American.

Edit: yeah, the way they go about it is crazy.
