Water killed the logic board on my MacBook Pro. Looking for something cheap. The most demanding thing I need it to do is basically stream TV shows from Project Free TV or play Netflix... Is this worth it? Should I get the extra 2GB ram? I really don't want to spend more than $250-$300 on a computer. Will cost $550 to fix my Mac.

thats a pretty old laptop. its probably enough to stream movies but core 2s are like 5 generations old at this point so dont expect a "fast" laptop.

if all you want to do is stream movies then why don't you assemble a cheap desktop with HDMI out and hook it up to your tv. Use a wireless keyboard/mouse combo and do it from the comfort of your couch:P

might as well get a cheap brand new netbook, if they still make those. current gen atoms/apus are faster than the core 2 duos

or you could get a tablet like the new nexus 7..im sure you could stream netflix from there

I want the laptop so I can take to work...

I guess I should just fork over the $500 to repair the logic board on the macbook... After RAM upgrade, HD upgrade, and taxes, I'm looking at $350 for the lenovo... the extra $150 all in to repair the macbook should be worth it... I really wanted to avoid that.

Or maybe I can find something new for $500 that's better than the early 2011 13in macbook pro?

I just sold a similar laptop but 15" and only 120GB HD for 100. Never ever buy a used laptop from a computer dealer.
dell outlet comes with a 1 yr warranty, for refurbs and scratched ones. Here's a decent one at 329
http://outlet.us.dell.com/...p;cs=22&puid=bdfb18e8

I've bought 3 laptops there and never had an issue. If you can wait a bit I'll pm you if they send me another coupon code, they usually do one a month for 20-35% off.

That and porn are like 99% of the uses for a computer and thus why people even own laptops. This is my only possibly conclusion.

@hawkeye: it depends on how old your MacBook pro already is. if it's 5 years old or more I would spend the lower amount of money on the other laptop or follow peoples suggestions on this thread and get a cheap laptop from dell rather than a dealer. Computers depreciate faster than cars:P
Regarding the new nexus 7: I think it only has a micro usb slot and can't really stream to anything that can't be networked which imo is somewhat llama.

I just buy 75$ used computers from the dudesb on kijiji or craigslist that sell them. Some of them know their stuff real well and scavenge all the parts or computers for nothing, do a little fix and resell. Obviously you have to check them out first but I've never had a problem.

Nah. Only got it because I had a 35% discount. No way I'm spending $500 to fix it. I'll open it up myself and drenched every part in alcohol. If that doesn't do it I'm getting something else.

I'm using a MacBook Pro I picked up in 2006.

;)

It actually runs amazingly well and does virtually everything I need. I'm definitely not a power user though.

I would love to think that if I bought another new MacBook Pro now that it would last me until 2020, but I am skeptical.

You mean when you could get a new one with this or last generation parts in the $400 - $500 range?
No.

and to actually be helpful, check tigerdirect or newegg, I always see these deals pop-up.

Probably better places too.

Yes it is old, but when you find something - more memory is ALWAYS good, get atleast 4Gb - windows 8 sucks, windws 7 is good

Harddrive? - if you store movies you need then space, if not 160Gb is plenty

office, isn't that freeware? :) - if you need it for work you have to buy it, if not, look at open office or something like that

So... turns out the drivers were corrupted... buddy of mine ran some firmware fix and the macbook works now. No cost to repair. Stupid Apple "Geniuses" my ass. The minute I said that I *suspected* water and video wasn't working he already made up his mind that logic board needed replacing.
