China can't be contained by ONE country throwing some tariffs on their goods. You need multilateralism now more than ever. But USA under Trump has alienated the rest of the west by waging/or threatening the same kind of tariffs/trade war and worse on the rest of the western world which is a really poor basis forfinding common ground.

When you did the Magnitsky act, EU did the same, and those sactions hurt. Same when we put sanctions on Iran. But now EU is circumventing the sanctions on Iran that the US wants to keep up. The rift is growing, China and Russia as well as a host of other authoritarians are the benefactors.
